Alice Gur-Arie began her career in advertising as a conceptual copywriter, graphic designer, and creative director. Client-side, she achieved responsibility for positioning global brands, and developing and executing their marketing and communication strategies around the world. Several years ago she returned to her creative roots, publishing work that "sits in the sweet spot where painting and photography converge." Now seven years into her practice, Alice is an award nominated, London based artist whose mixed media work has been auctioned at Christie's and exhibited at the Embassy of Iceland, London. It is held in collections in the UK, US, Israel, Germany and Canada.
Describing herself as an interpreter who "wants to engage both head and heart," she takes photographs around the world and repaints them digitally by hand into contemporary fine art images. She is completely self taught. The concept of "seeing" is at the heart of her practice. Combining photography with digital painting, she invites the viewer to replace the window through which they see the world, with a lens that interprets the world into something that is at once familiar and foreign. Inspired by the natural world, landscapes, seascapes, wildlife and images of nature dominate her portfolio, ranging in style from bold saturated abstracts to soft, textured tones. Her work starts with photographs, taken in foreign locales. In some cases, the mode of transport itself becomes an integral component of the finished image, producing aerials and underwater worlds. Treating a photograph as a canvas, images are digitally "repainted" by hand with a "brush", sometimes in layers, sometimes pixel by pixel. Of her creative approach she says, "What is critical, is understanding that my work is not about digital manipulation or software, but about my vision, and my ability to transform the canvas into an aesthetically compelling, memorable, visual experience." Ms. Gur-Arie is represented by a number of galleries in London, and in North America and Europe by Bridgeman Images. Her work also appears on selected art websites, including LensCulture, Saatchionline, The Art Circus and f22/ State.
