Posted on October 3, 2013
Meet our October artist of the month, Darren MacPherson as he prepares a new collection of work this autumn.

Questions:
Name : Darren MacPherson
Discipline : Painter
Age : 40…ish
Where do you live : London
Where did you study : Brunel University
Life ambition : To keep pushing myself.
1. Who, or what is your greatest influence on your life and art?
My children. By far. I have 3 wonderful daughters and they never cease to amaze me with their creativity, style and love. After that, probably chocolate!
2. Who is your favourite artist at the moment?
I've always liked the German expressionists, Kirchner et al; and I've always been influenced by Pollock, Bacon & Basquiat. At the moment though, Fin DAC impresses me the most. The sheer magnitude and intricacy of his work is phenomenal.
3. Describe a typical day in the studio in no more than 5 words.
Plan, chaos, plan, chaos, paint.
4. Spontaneity or planning?
Although I tell myself I’m spontaneous (and I am) I sometimes surprise myself how much planning goes into each piece. Sooo…spontaneity as that's the fun bit!
5. What do you do in the event of a creative block?
Turn to the internet for inspiration and study the Italian masters.
6. Do you have a favourite piece of your own work?
‘An Inconsequential Truth’. It scared the life out of me before I started it. It's the piece you can see on my profile pic.
7. What is the most challenging aspect of your work?
Maintaining the expressiveness – the concept of ‘don't think, just paint’.
8. Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?
Painting every day towards my next solo show. And in my spare time, teaching kids expressive art, as I did long ago.
9. Please recommend one piece of essential reading.
Graham Greene’s ‘The Quiet American’. Every word is like poetry.
10. If you could time travel to one era or event, when would you choose?
Sixties.
11. Tea or Coffee?
Coffee…black.
12. Who would be your dream dinner guest?
My Dad.
13. What super power would you have for a day?
To fly, although I’m actually scared of flying.
14. What are you listening to at the moment?
Daft Punk. Great to paint to as you get so many different vibes on each track.
