January artist of the month : Kristin Gaudio Endsley
Posted on January 8, 2014
Kristin has been represented by Curious Duke Gallery since March 2012, not only creating beautiful original pieces of work but also collaborating with Hannah Adamaszek. Together the two artists have created powerful images conveying their distinctly female perspectives.
Kristin's driving force is her use of colour on the surface with shape, gesture, and interpretation playing an important role.
Name: Kristin Gaudio Endsley
Discipline: Painter
Age: 33
Where do you live: Hoxton, London
Where did you study: Virginia Tech University
Life ambition: To live a long and happy life.
Who, or what is your greatest influence on your life and art?
My mother. She is an artist herself, even though she never became a professional artist, she passed to me that intrinsic love of art. She educated from a young age about different types of work, and went to galleries and had discussions about the pieces we saw. To this day we still do.
Who is your favourite artist at the moment?
Oscar Murillo
Describe a typical day in the studio in no more than 5 words.
Here are 5 adjectives that sum up my studio time, usually in this order. Focus, distracted, determined, unfulfilled, elated.
Spontaneity or planning?
That is a tough one. Planning prior to painting and spontaneity while painting.
What do you do in the event of a creative block?
I am a very visual person so a powerful image can spark creativity. Pinterest has helped me to organize and access images quickly when I have a creative block.
Do you have a favourite piece of your own work?
No
What is the most challenging aspect of your work?
Getting paid enough to make it my full time job…that would be wonderful!
Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?
Continuing to work as an artist, maybe with my MFA completed. Hopefully selling art to people who were at one point a little nervous about buying art, and now feel excited about it. Also, working only on my art.
Please recommend one piece of essential reading.
For art, The New York Times or The Guardian. For pleasure I could go on and on, but one of my favourites is East of Eden by John Steinbeck
If you could time travel to one era or event, when would you choose?
1920s, Paris
Tea or Coffee?
Coffee
Who would be your dream dinner guest?
Are we allowed to choose someone who is no longer living? Diana Vreeland.
What super power would you have for a day?
Flying/Teleporting. I could travel quickly and access unbelievable amounts of inspiration, and not have to deal with Ryan Air or Easy Jet.
What are you listening to at the moment?
The Lumineers and The Crystal Fighters
