Roy's People World of miniatures
Image Life 3D3 by Roy's People
Roy's People has taken over the planet with his world of miniatures this year. 2014 has seen his people run rampant over Time Out, Covent Garden for his Little Man Hunt with The Big Issue, and now Curious Duke Gallery with his first UK solo show Street Life (see below for details). So why thought we'd ask Roy's People, why is that we love the world of the Miniature?
“The miniature world is fascinating. Think back to The Borrowers, Land of The Giants, Honey I Shrunk the Kids, and it is obvious our love and adoration for everything small began a long time ago.
I would say us ‘big’ people are fascinated by our miniature counterparts because of their innocence, charm and character, and I also believe the big kid inside us wishes they were that small, just for a day, can you imagine?! Miniatures have that irresistible ‘ahhhh that’s sweet’ factor. Personally, I never get bored of using miniatures, it makes our world look completely different. Looking at everything from the perspective of being 2cm tall is fascinating. All of a sudden, boring and irrelevant objects seem very different, and what might be normal for us may be a big problem for the little people. Showing this world to people is something that isn’t seen very often, and because of our adoration for these little guys it has become a respected art from.
I first started to explore this world 2 years ago, whilst taking photos of a model train track. Very quickly I was amazed and completely hooked on what the miniature figures were doing. My first reaction was ‘how cool is that’ before proceeding to taking photos of miniatures everywhere I could imagine. When I started to promote ‘Roy’s People’ as a concept, I hadn’t researched what else was out there. Quickly people wanted to buy my pictures, and comparisons had been made to similar artists using miniatures. For me this meant that people loved this world like I did, and to sell my pictures as art was acceptable.
But I believe above all that we can relate to the miniature worlds and will forever be fascinated in these mischievous, playful, charming little characters. Long may the miniature rule!”
Thank you Roy!
