As the Secret Art Prize 2014 exhibition draws closer, it's time to meet Runner up Karolina Albricht! Beautifully executed, each piece stretches both in and out in depth and subject.
You can see Albricht's work on show this September, details here.
Discipline: Painting
Age: 30
Where do you live?: London, Bethnal Green.
Where did you study?: Krakow, Poland.
Life ambition: To be able to live off what I create.
What can you tell us about your artistic practice?
My painting revolves around the human being, their surroundings and realities. It merges the inner images, which ripen over time with the observed ones. It is my tool for exploring and narrating those images that sometimes haunt me for years, until I finally decide to confront them.
Images of the human form in self-conflict, as an individual and repetitive fragment of the world. Torn between its desires and aspirations. Deprived of self-control and itself but persevering or giving in.
Whichever aspect or moment I decide to capture, the work will always aim to explore the energy emanating from the individual within all its tensions and consequences. The short moments of releasing ephemeral and becoming aware of the physical existence: ones finiteness, imperfections and also power. Becoming aware of the dullness and surreal irony of the existence.
The elements of the experience is a frequent issue dealt with in my work. It depicts the lack of balance and brittle boundaries of our decisions and lives. How we begin the journey with values and aims and end up aimless and valueless. Finally, we submit or self-destruct.
What does the Secret Art Prize mean to you?
I hope it will help me progress as an independent artist.
Choose one word: Red
Grotesque or beautiful? I believe there’s no harmony without mixing 2 opposite elements- so both. I think grotesque and beauty are complimentary of each other and the presence of both can lead to a complete piece.
Urban or surreal? Surrealism is a strong influence to me. I admire Rene Magritte in particular. To me art is more than a reproduction of the world.
Planned or spontaneous? I think both work for me, depending on the project. Some themes require more planning than others, but some need spontaneity. I always try to think of a plan for each series, however, it’s very fluid and changes constantly.
Monochrome or rainbow? I like to experiment with colour, but I never perceived myself as a colourist. Maybe it’s yet ahead of me!
Thanks Karolina!
