I Know What I Like Group Show: the Stories and Artists

The I Know What I Like group show is the first in a series of exhibitions designed to promote artistic talent from the ranks of I Know What I Like members. It is part of my commitment to facilitate top quality artistic encounters and provide a lively networking environment for young arts I know and believe in.
The group show features 15 artists whom I have chosen from an open submission earlier in 2014. They are bright, talented people whose work stood out in the selection process through its visual appeal and unrepeatable nature. I took it upon myself to understand each artist’s views on their own creative practice, and capture their individuality both through the selection of the work, and through its presentation. The results are visible online, in the group show catalogue, and on the gallery walls for the duration of the show.
The one curatorial principle I stood by was that visual artworks should be compelling and autonomous. They should tell their stories and manifest their power without the aid of biographic notes or supportive statements. Truly valuable art needs no explanation or hype and does not benefit from repeated use of enthusiastic adjectives. What I propose is that there is considerable appeal in each of the works that have gone on display, and will let them introduce their own causes.
All art in the I Know What I Like group show is affordable 2D: photography, painting, collage and other mixed media, and there will also be some unique art objects available. The fifteen artists are:
Alex “SR47” Walton – pop icons and urban art stencils
Ana Rita – sophisticated, hyperbolic female portraits
Clara Copley – atmospheric photographs of women’s emotions
Dan Pearce – slick, synthetic, abstract-decorative art
Ernesto Muñiz – exuberant, irreverent “guerilla shrine” collages
Francesca Albini – humorous, non-pretentious, intelligent collages
Laura Iosifescu – sculptural, heavy oil paintings
Mandy McCartin – energetic paintings of social decay and urban fringes
Michael Young – evocative photography of contemporary London life
Mohammed Sami – grand paintings of violence and finesse
Monsieur Sable – flat, minimalist city assemblages
Noemi Roswita Hans – eerie portraits of indistinct figures
Tony Scrivener – skillful studies of forgotten images
Vanesa Longchamp – introvert, graceful female characters
Yola Kudela – delicate prints of monumental scale paper paste-ups
It is my privilege to be able to show the work of these artists under I Know What I Like, and have them represent our artistic values. I am very grateful to Eleni Duke and the Curious Duke Gallery team for helping me make this happen and hosting the group show in their well-liked, welcoming space.
