Buy Art this Valentine's Day
This week we are talking about love. Big, inspiring love that us mere mortals can only hope to convey, so we consulted contemporary artists and art world greats to help us tell our love's how we feel this St. Valentine's Day.
This post would not be complete without mentioning the greatest painter of his loves- Pablo Picasso. Painting his eight significant loves in his life, Picasso going so far as painting I Love Eva in a number of works, referencing his second love Eva Gouel from 1912-15. However, it was the artists last love Jacqueline Roque who became his second wife that inspired him to paint over 70 portraits.
Jacqueline with Flowers, 1954.
The love story of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera goes beyond the art world. Although, said to be a fiery open relationship Kahlo often painted her husband, calling him “a great comrade” having met him at the height of his fame as a social revolutionary. Maybe a little late, Rivera said of Kahlo after her death "it was the most tragic day of my life. Too late now I realised that the most wonderful part of my life had been my love for Frida."
Frieda and Kahlo, 1931
Her husband Max Ernst introduced Leonora Carrington to the Surrealist circle in Paris. Having met whilst Ernst was married they were reunited in Paris and set up home to create their guardian animals that represented each other, Ernst introduced birds into his work, whilst Carrington painted her husband as a horse, as seen in The Inn of the Dawn Horse, 1939.
