Posted on December 17, 2015

Take a trip back to the 80s and 90s with the Street Luxe aesthetic of An Original Leroy.

Tell us a little bit about your practice?
I currently have a commercial fashion brand called An Original Leroy. It is very heavily print focused and has a Street-Luxe aesthetic. All things 80s or 90s inspire me and the label is often tagged as retro-futuristic due to the old school versus new school look.

The brand was the winner of a competition run by PURE (the tradeshow) in which the prize was shop space as a result I currently have a flagship store in Camden town, London. I also sell in boutiques in Shoreditch and a stockist in Greece with the wholesale arm being more of a focus next season and moving forward.
We currently produce all stock in the UK and in Limited Edition quantities with production taking place mainly in-house with everything finished by hand.

How did you find yourself in your trade?
Having had a previous fashion business I was working in the City and became disillusioned. The company I was working for went into administration and I saw it as the perfect time to get back to doing what I love. I decided on the concept, produced the first set of samples and have not looked back, that was in April 2014 and here we are with a flagship store and big plans moving forward.

What advice would you give to anyone starting out?
Play to your strengths and realise your weaknesses. Do what you can do well to the best of your ability and hire somebody great to do what you do badly.

Make friends with others doing the same as you. It’s pretty lonely being an entrepreneur or artist of any sort. Having friends that are doing the same as you and understand makes it not so solitary.
