Is art an investment?
It is becoming more and more apparent that art buyers are investing in art work of living contemporary artists. Whereas a proven career was once paramount to a purchase, talent and potential is a platform to buy from. The thrill of purchasing graduate art, following their career and noting that something you bought 10 years ago is now worth 20 times the amount you bought it for (if not more), is like winning the artist lottery and very rewarding indeed.
Buying art from graduates and emerging artists is becoming ever popular. Damien Hirst was first discovered at the Freeze exhibition (a graduate art show in 1988), a purchase that would have been a very wise decision for anyone. Emerging and new artists are something of a CDG speciality. We prowl the graduate shows and scout out the next big thing to give you the pick of fresh young talent producing tomorrows masterpieces. Starting with smaller artworks and less well known artists can only give you an asset that will appreciate in value.
Eleni Duke, founder of Curious Duke Gallery states that ‘it is absolutely fantastic to showcase these incredible talents and for them to get the recognition they deserve to really excel in the future.’ Eleni, who has been dubbed the Duchess of Whitecross Street by Angel Magazine, is currently working with a troupe of great young talents, including Nathan Bowen- an up and coming street artists who talents where showcased on the BBC Apprentice in 2012.
Kate Knight's beating hearts and scavenging yet protective birds of prey are the investment you've been looking for a recently graduating in Fine Art Painting at Chelsea College of Art and design in 2005 and was selected as the runner up for the Marmite Prize for Painting 2010 for her painting of a hangman’s noose titled ‘Illuminated’. Kate Knight is definitely a name that one will hear may times in the future.
With the recent controversy over Banksy's Slave Labour mural, Curious Duke's Paul 'Don' Smith has waded in with his iconic Banker image to sit on the North London wall, read more on investment in Street Art here to see how it is a safe backing#http://www.comparethefinancialmarkets.com/Investors-buy-Paul-Don-Smith-Art-Prints.htm
Eleni is witnessing a surge of art lovers diverting from buying their art as mass produced printed photographs to spending the same amount on an original piece, thus making it not only something that is aesthetically pleasing in the home or office but something of an investment. Eleni explains that “my customers love to follow the careers of the artists they buy into, it’s almost like seeing a band that you love work their way from small gigs to arena tours, it’s great for them to support the artists career and follow the investment they have made.”
