Crookholm is part of the hamlet, Rowanburn in Canonbie. A small former mining village, its only shop closed in 2003. The Canonbie Coalfield is one of the few areas in the UK outside of the English Midlands where late Carboniferous period red-beds are found, red beds being a layer of condensed carbon.
