Based directly on the river Stour, Sandwich is associated directly with the cinqe ports, more commonly known as the five ports consisting of Hastings, Romney, Hyth, Dover and Sandwich. King Richard the Lionheart landed at Sandwich after famously being imprisoned by the Holy Roman Emperor Richard VIth.
