For me this painting explores a deep longing or yearning for something that does not exist or is unattainable. Abstract and colourful at first glance, but as the viewer looks further the image takes on a darker form. At first you see the face looking towards what might be a rose, which for me represents the subject of desire, then you see a disfigured body: the perception has changed. In a moment the image can take on a whole new meaning. I like the idea of creating something that could be gentle and simultaneously dark and heavy, and was attempting to create a sense of beauty within sorrow. I find something powerful in juxtaposing these ideas together as they feel contradictory. It’s a subject of great interest to me and the painting morphing into other visual possibilities is of great interest to me.
