London Extent by Tannaz Oroumchi

To coincide with her solo show Hectified, architect and artist Tannaz Oroumchi gave us a list of questions about how we use and perceive the city (full list). Here, founder of I Know What I Like and Secret Art Prize judge Sabina Andron tells us her views.

Why do work?

In order to be active, to produce yourself, for a sense of purpose.

What is work?

It’s routine, commute and screens, but it’s also creation, making, production, exchange and a means to live in our society.

Why does the city look the way that it does?

It looks the way it does in order to attract, to provide, to exclude, to function, to segregate, to accommodate – all at the same time.

What are we engaging with?

Too many problems, insufficient joys.

What is the city?

Processes, images and materials entangled in an increasingly intricate way.

Art/Architecture?

Art and architecture. More Art as Architecture, less Architecture as Art.

What does the city need to do?

To attract, to provide, to include, to function, to connect, to accommodate – all at the same time.

What is the problem/s with the city?

Exclusion, segregation, power hierarchies.

Why draw?

Because you can!

Why show?

To ascertain your right to visibility.

Why a gallery?

Because it is still a welcome convention in the organization of the art world.

Does the city need to make you think?

The city always makes you think but most thoughts are too implicit to change anything; the more overt the thoughts generated by the city, the higher the quality of the urban experience.

Thank you Sabina!
