Introducing Emmylou
Name: Emmylou Yeomans
Discipline: Painter
Age: 35
Where do you live?: St Albans, Hertfordshire
Where did you study?: Hertfordshire University & Middlesex University
Life ambition: Full time inspirational and influential artist who travels the world to depict and translate scenes through my eyes. I want to make people smile at the imagery created and to enhance or touch their lives in some way. I want to also make sure all children and everyone in general have access to art in some way; Art is all for, not just the elite.
How did you get started?: As a child I loved to play in nature and found art to be my world. Three years ago I was asked to paint some idealistic landscape commissions and it went on from there. What started out as a few picture perfect images grew into developed, emotional, evocative pieces for me. I would wake up with a vision and paint it. Until I captured the vision on canvas, it remained in my thoughts and consumed me until I did it.
What can you tell us about your artistic practice?: I paint oil on large canvas… I like the idea of not conforming to the conventional expectation of what people want from the picture perfect landscapes. I like the idea of beauty being distorted by human emotion, which to me is painting and incorporating the drips, as drips are free flowing and has the potential to spoil an image. It’s how I feel about life, not knowing what may happen and where it may go.
What may look outwardly perfect has become damaged making a beauty of its very own. As both creator and ‘destroyer’ of my images, I wield the ultimate control that force you to see that beauty in the world have become subjective to our emotions.
Do you have a routine, or an exercise you have to do get your started?:I paint from what I see (visions) I put on music and get consumed in what I am painting. It’s as though I am not painting it when I produce the drips I don't have a plan until I start dripping the paint. I do what feels right and paint to the music and my emotion at that time. I then incorporate the realistic things within the distorted background making it a contradiction.
What are your ambitions in the art world?: To become an inspirational and influential artist.
What advice would you have for anyone starting out?: Go with your gut and never give up. Paint what your heart wants you to regardless of value. You have talent and the world needs to see the 'real you'
And lastly, choose one word: Spontaneous.
